I used to envy Luke Skywalker for having Obi Wan Kenobi or Yoda as his mentors. Until I got mine, I used to dream of someone training me to be a real life Jedi who battles life’s challenges and fights for whatever advocacy I believe in.
Getting a mentor is one of the most brilliant ideas I have taken during my noob phase and I would massively recommend for starters. Not that I already become of one of the millionaires or as successful as my mentors for me to support or claim the soundness of mentorship, but today I am certainly becoming the person I wanted to be with the guidance of my mentors.
Along my journey to financial freedom, or with life in general, I have picked important points why you should get a mentor:
Knowledge and Skills Transfer
My mentor once told me “I have committed tons of mistake but you don’t have to”. Mentors have passed through that road long before us and have probably gone back and forth. Their journey has given them solid experiences where they learned effective approaches on getting the results. With mentorship, knowledge is hand down from the mentor to the student minus the mistakes they have incurred in the past.
Working with mentors is also vital in developing business prowess, life skills, and important habits in succeeding. Mentors place us in a right mind frame, attitude, and constant execution of proven strategies which in turn shape our abilities to carry out more than what is required.
Access to Network of People
Successful mentors are people who have already established themselves in their respective areas with a substantial number of great people they have worked with. Hanging out with your mentor gives you the opportunity to know the right people within your industry who can help you with your endeavors. Most of the time, my mentors, introduce me to their business partners, associates, or even people they have direct or indirect working relationships; these people in one way or another have aided me in my journey.
Great mentors produce future leaders
Today’s influential and powerful people were once students of great mentors. Mark Zuckerberg successfully built his high-quality team at Facebook with the guidance of Steve Jobs. Bill gates success stories were written with credits to his mentor Warren Buffet who taught him to handle tough times and the importance of long-term perspective. Today’s quality leaders in various market niches are products of great mentors. It is important to find good, if not great, mentors to ignite you towards your dreams. Before jumping into someone’s class check his track record, character, values, and the direction he envisions to take you.
Blazing Inspiration, Motivation
I remember a scene in Karate Kids when the protagonist was about the get defeated suddenly regained back his strength when he had this eye contact with Mr. Miyagi, his mentor. I would certainly agree that it was not their eye-to-eye moment which turned the table but the inspiration the karate kid derived from his mentor. He probably tapped those lessons and struggles from their training, recalled words of wisdom from Mr.Miyagi and that indispensable motivation to continue and win the fight.
One Last Thing…
Mentors have left a colossal impact in my life in countless wonderful ways. I have gradually gained the knowledge, wisdom, and skills significant in achieving my dreams and that long overdue success. Throughout this quest, I have grown with confidence and positive mindset with the counsel of my great mentors. But more than the push and redirection, I am perpetually thankful for those encouragements which fire me up during my darkest hours and those simple yet powerful words like “I believe in you”.
